Reach Out and Read

Posted on: February 12, 2010

Minnie Mama has always been very passionate about reading and as a result of this has bestowed that passion into Mini Minnie Mama. Seriously, I have read Isabella books since she was in utero and I truly believe that’s why she’s such a little book-worm today. Okay, so she doesn’t actually read the books yet, but she LOVES listening to stories or even just looking at the books by herself in her special ‘reading’ chair as she calls it. If you give Isabella a toy and a book to play with, she will 9 times out 10 sit quietly with the book. That 10th time she was given a brand new Ariel doll with color changing hair from her godmother and let’s be honest here, the Ariel doll was wicked cool!

Anyways, with all that said can you imagine how excited and honored Minnie Mama was when she was personally contacted by Reach Out and Read to help promote a contest they’re trying to win.

In case you are unfamiliar with Reach Out and Read, they are a  nationwide nonprofit early literacy initiative which works with doctors and nurses to prepare young children to succeed in school.  Reach Out and Read was founded in Boston in 1989, and their national headquarters are still in Charlestown today.

Today, Reach Out and Read serves 3.8 million children nationwide, at 4,500 clinics, hospitals, and health centers.

Our 25,000 participating doctors and nurses give a brand-new, age-appropriate book to children at every regular pediatric checkup from 6 months old through the time they enter kindergarten. Pediatricians also speak with parents about the importance of reading aloud to young children every day. We know that Reach Out and Read works, because 14 peer-reviewed, published research studies over the last two decades have all confirmed the effectiveness of the program.

Okay so now that you’re reading all of this you’re probably wondering why the heck I am telling you this, right? Well, Minnie Mama is hoping to recruit her fellow book-worms to help Reach Out and Read win $250K and ready 25,000 kids to excel in school!

Reach Out and Read is participating in the Pepsi Refresh project, an online giving challenge for individuals and organizations who are making a positive impact in their communities. With your help, Reach Out and Read has the chance to win $250,000, which will help them provide books and prepare an additional 25,000 children for success in school!

Did you know that more than 60% of low-income families in the U.S. have ZERO children’s books in their homes?

You can help change that by voting for Reach Out and Read!  Families served by the Reach Out and Read program read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten better ready to succeed, with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills.

So c’mon fellow mamas, dads, grandparents, caregivers, and anyone who cares about our children and the future of our country – do your part and vote today!  🙂
